3 levels of engagement.
Engagement is often talked about as a desired objective, but often not much time is spent on what level of engagement we are talking about. Take a look at the following Engagement Matrix that Darren Hill and Dan Collins have been working on.

Short term engagement -
The key word in achieving instant, short term engagement is reward. Human beings are drawn to gratification. Before relationships and shared beliefs are found, engagement is best achieved through an exchange of currency. The mistake is to think of currency as simply money. Love, recognition, attention, acceptance...there are many forms of currency in our lives. So whether it is the individual feeling a sense of instant reward because of the right job fit, or a team feeling engaged because of recognition for collective effort, or the customer feeling engaged because of value for money, short term engagement is anchored to reward.
Medium term engagement -
To have return or effort past the short term, the keyword is personal. To go to another level from short term we need to honour the individual as a primary strategy. Everyone wants to feel loved. Individuals need to achieve personal success, team members need to exercise personal consideration for each other, and every customer needs to feel special. That’s how we move from short term engagements to the medium term.
Long term engagement -
The highest level of engagement is when you get people who are raving fans for the rest of their lives. We achieved this through the keyword of shared. For an individual to stay engaged across time, their needs to be a shared value for both parties where both feel like they are getting a ‘great deal’. People will stay engaged within a team indefinitely if they share a sense of common purpose, and as Simon Sinek talks about in 'It Starts With Why' customers will forever stay loyal if they believe in what you believe in.
Understand which level of engagement you are trying to achieve, then employ these keywords as mantras.
